What started it all???

I was searching the internet looking for instructions for making a pair of earrings for my father's "lady friend". I used to make bead jewelry (eons ago), but none of that was really catching my fancy. Then I saw a pair of beautiful earrings made of jump rings. I could do that! I had worked with jump rings many times before and already had lots of the tools needed. From there it exploded! By "it" I mean "everything". I researched designs, bought supplies, made a few pieces, got an Etsy account and opened a shop.
But how do I motivate myself to come up with new designs? I don't want to just make the same few pieces over and over again.
Answer: I have decided to take part in a "Pair-A-Day-For-A-Month" Earring challenge. I'll make a new pair every day for all of January. Follow along with me to see if I can really do it. If I can, maybe I'll start a "Bracelet-A-Week" project next!

Day 4

Helm Chain Earrings:
This is another design that I saw and thought I could easily recreate. The weave is interesting in that with typical chain mail each ring is connected to another, yet in this weave the oxidized silver rings are not actually connected to anything, they are trapped in place by other rings.

Materials used:
2 black nickel ear wires
20- 18 gauge, 5mm silver jump rings
2- 18 gauge, 5mm black nickel jump rings
16- 18 gauge, 8mm black nickel jump rings
6- 18 gauge, 8mm oxidized silver jump rings
4- 18 gauge, 11mm black nickel jump rings
Step 4

Instructions:

Step 1- Open all of the rings except the 5mm silver rings.
Step 2- Weave 2 closed 5mm silver rings onto an open 5mm black nickel, before closing add an ear wire.
Step 3- Weave an open 8mm black nickel ring on both of the 5mm silver rings, before closing add 2 more 5mm silver rings. Weave another open 8mm black nickel ring through the same path of all 4 silver rings.
Step 4- Weave an open 8mm oxidized silver ring between the pair of 8mm black nickel rings and around the pair of 5mm silver rings; but not through them. Close the oxidized silver ring.
Step 5- Repeat steps 3 and 4, two more times to make a chain.
Step 5
Step 6- Weave an 11mm black nickel ring to the last pair of 5mm silver rings and close. Weave another 11mm black nickel ring through the same path and close.

Experience Level: Beginner
Approximate Time: 25 minutes

I really like this design. The original that I saw used all the same color rings and instead of larger rings at the end, all the main rings were the same size. I think the way I made them adds a little more interest.  I am excited that this design is so easy and fast. I can imagine how cute they would look in other colors. Keep an eye out for them in my Etsy shop!
